Overview of the Technical Apprenticeship Program: UCL is excited to invite talented and motivated individuals to apply for its Technical Apprenticeship Program in the fields of Boilermaking, Electrical Engineering, Fitting and Turning, Millwrighting, Mechanical Fitting, and Instrument Mechanician. This program is designed to provide hands-on experience and training across various technical disciplines, allowing apprentices to work alongside experienced professionals while earning valuable qualifications and industry-recognized credentials.
Apprentices will receive comprehensive training, participate in real-world projects, and be mentored by skilled technicians to help them develop the expertise and competencies necessary for a successful career in the technical field.
Available Apprenticeships:
- Boilermaker
- Role Overview: Boilermakers are responsible for the fabrication, assembly, installation, and repair of large metal structures, often involving the construction of boilers, pressure vessels, and tanks. Apprentices will learn welding, cutting, and metalworking techniques, as well as the interpretation of technical drawings and schematics.
- Key Responsibilities:
- Fabricating and installing boilers, pipes, and metal frameworks
- Welding, cutting, and shaping metal components
- Inspecting and testing fabricated materials for quality and safety
- Following health and safety regulations in all tasks
- Assisting in maintaining and repairing industrial systems
- Electrician
- Role Overview: Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical systems in a variety of settings, including educational, industrial, and residential environments. Apprentices will work with wiring systems, lighting, electrical panels, and fault diagnosis.
- Key Responsibilities:
- Installing electrical wiring and systems
- Performing maintenance on electrical equipment and systems
- Diagnosing faults and making repairs
- Reading and interpreting electrical blueprints and wiring diagrams
- Adhering to safety standards and building codes
- Fitter and Turner
- Role Overview: Fitter and Turners specialize in the assembly and maintenance of mechanical systems, ensuring that machines, tools, and components are accurately constructed and maintained. Apprentices will gain skills in the use of machine tools, mechanical assembly, and system testing.
- Key Responsibilities:
- Operating and maintaining machine tools (lathe, milling, etc.)
- Assembling and fitting mechanical components
- Conducting inspections and troubleshooting of mechanical systems
- Ensuring all work complies with safety standards and specifications
- Collaborating with team members to repair and install machinery
- Millwright
- Role Overview: Millwrights are skilled technicians who install, maintain, and repair machinery and mechanical equipment used in manufacturing plants and industrial settings. Apprentices will learn the complexities of mechanical systems, including hydraulics, pneumatics, and motors.
- Key Responsibilities:
- Installing and aligning machinery
- Performing preventative maintenance on equipment
- Troubleshooting mechanical systems and conducting repairs
- Reading and interpreting technical drawings and schematics
- Ensuring machinery operates efficiently and safely
- Mechanical Fitter
- Role Overview: Mechanical Fitters are responsible for assembling and fitting mechanical components into industrial equipment, machinery, and systems. Apprentices will gain expertise in troubleshooting, maintaining, and ensuring the smooth operation of mechanical systems.
- Key Responsibilities:
- Assembling and fitting mechanical components
- Conducting maintenance and repairs on mechanical systems
- Ensuring machinery operates efficiently and safely
- Working with engineers to install and maintain equipment
- Adhering to safety protocols and regulations
- Instrument Mechanician
- Role Overview: Instrument Mechanicians maintain and repair instruments and control systems that monitor and regulate mechanical systems. Apprentices will gain knowledge in instrumentation, automation, and control systems, vital to various industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, and energy.
- Key Responsibilities:
- Installing and maintaining control systems and instrumentation
- Calibrating instruments and adjusting settings to ensure accurate readings
- Troubleshooting and repairing instrumentation systems
- Assisting with system upgrades and modifications
- Adhering to safety standards and procedures
Requirements:
- A keen interest in technical fields and a desire to learn
- A strong problem-solving attitude and mechanical aptitude
- Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment
- Basic understanding of mathematics and technical drawings (depending on the specific apprenticeship)
- Minimum of GCSEs in relevant subjects (Maths, Science, and English)
- Previous experience in a technical or mechanical environment is a plus but not required
