2025 Unisa application information

Unisa is committed to providing fair and equitable access to higher education, aiming to address historical inequalities through its application and selection process. This approach ensures that Unisa considers past imbalances while maintaining high-quality standards. The process emphasizes improved student support and aligns new student intake with the available academic resources and infrastructure to maximize students’ chances of success.

What does the selection process involve?

The selection process centers around calculating your individual points score, which takes into account your final Grade 12 marks along with other factors such as the school you attended, your gender, socio-economic background, race, and more. Before applying, make sure you meet both the general and college-specific admission requirements, as well as the Academic Points Score (APS) required for your chosen qualification. The minimum APS varies between colleges and qualifications, so be sure to check the admission details for your specific choice.

It’s important to note that admission to Unisa in 2025 is not automatic. Students will be accepted based on the number of available spaces in each qualification.

Application Process

You may apply for up to two qualifications, listed in order of preference. However, if both applications are successful, you can only register for one. Unisa will notify you of the outcome of your application. If you are successful, Unisa will specify the qualification you’ve been accepted for and the relevant period (e.g., semester 1).

Once you receive an offer, you must accept or decline it within the designated time. If you miss this deadline, your offer will be withdrawn and given to another applicant. First-time applicants to Unisa must complete the First-Year Experience MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) before they can accept the offer.

You can only accept one offer, meaning that if you accept an offer for one qualification, the other will be automatically withdrawn. Once you accept an offer, you must register for the semester in which you’ve been admitted. If you do not register for that period, you will need to reapply during the next application cycle.

Who Needs to Apply?

Anyone wishing to begin a new qualification must apply for admission, including:

  • First-time applicants to Unisa
  • Unisa students changing qualifications or specializations
  • Those completing a higher certificate who wish to continue with further undergraduate studies
  • Individuals who previously applied, were offered a space, but did not accept or register
  • Everyone planning to enrol for classes at a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college under the Unisa-TVET agreement must apply for admission.
